Gold Coast, QLD – The birthplace of coffee finds home on the Gold Coast with the launch of Ethiopian coffee brand, Mankira Coffee owned by local Gold Coaster Tewodros Fekadu. Tewodros, originally from Ethiopia, started Mankira Coffee out of his desire to share the best of Ethiopian coffee set against a cultural backdrop and strong linkages to the past.
Ethiopian legend has it that coffee was born in the Mankira forest of the Kaffa region in western Ethiopia centuries ago when a herder named Kaldi noticed that his goats started dancing energetically when they nibbled on the red berries of a particular bush and out of curiosity, Kaldi tried the berries too. His excitement over the discovery prompted him to take the berries to a monk, but the disapproving monk threw them into a fire, from which an enticing aroma billowed. The roasted beans were raked from the embers, ground, and dissolved in hot water, yielding the world's first cup of coffee.
Since that time, coffee has become an integral part of Ethiopian life with coffee ceremonies being held in most households, forming the foundation of Ethiopian hospitality. It has even espoused proverbs such as “coffee is our bread”, soccer teams called “Ethiopia Coffee” and beauty pageants crowning the winner “Miss Ethiopia Coffee”!
Ethiopia is Africa’s top coffee exporter and genetically, has the most diversified types of coffee in the world (there are thousands). “Each type of coffee bean, just like us humans, is unique with its own individual character and personality,” says Tewodros. “Each bag of Mankira Coffee is bursting with personality and steeped in centuries of traditions and culture that sit behind the Ethiopian coffee bean,” he added. “Mankira Coffee only works with the best so all of our beans are put through a rigourous selection process to ensure that only the cream of the crop make their way to your cup!”
Freshly roasted on the Gold Coast, Mankira Coffee's mission is to bring the best of coffee from Ethiopia to your coffee machine whether at home, in the office or at your favourite cafe.
To celebrate the launch of Mankira Coffee, free coffee tastings will be held at Silipo Coffee in Southport. There will also be a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony and Christmas gift ideas to kick off the festive season. All welcome.
